Motorcycle Safety Tips
Whether you’re driving a car or a motorcycle, the rules of the road are
the same but driving a motorcycle requires different skills than a car
and a few extra steps to make sure you stay safe on the road. Follow our
five motorcycle safety tips below and make sure your next ride goes
Wear a helmet with a face shield or eyewear at all times.
Did you know that if there’s an accident, a motorcycle rider not wearing
a helmet is five times more likely to sustain a head injury? Making sure
you have a properly fitting helmet to protect against a head injury is
one of the most important safety tips for anyone on a motorcycle.
Make sure you have the appropriate gear to minimize injuries.
Like a helmet, making sure you wear the appropriate gear is important
too. Leather clothing, nonskid shoes or boots, and gloves can all help
protect you from being injured in the event of an accident. If you know
you’ll be driving after sunset, you may also want to consider wearing
something reflective or attaching reflective tape to your clothing to
make sure other drivers can see you at night.
Watch out for other drivers and do not assume that they see you.
Did you know that over half of all accidents involving a motorcycle are
caused by a vehicle driver violating the motorcycle driver’s right of
way? It’s important to do what you can to ensure that other drivers know
you’re on the road with them. Ride with your headlights on, avoid blind
spots, signal in advance before you change lanes or turn, keep your eyes
on the road and look out for turning vehicles.
Don’t ride drowsy and always ride sober.
Making sure you stay safe on the road requires your full attention.
Driving while drowsy can impair your ability to react while on the road
so get a good night’s sleep and make sure you’re well rested before
taking off. It’s also important to make sure you don’t drink and ride.
Just like it isn’t safe to operate a vehicle after drinking, you
shouldn’t ride a motorcycle either. The safety of you and those around
you depends on it.
