Breast Cancer Awareness Month

October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month across the United States. During this time you’ll see NFL players donning pink to honor those who have dealt with breast cancer, walks across the country to raise money, along with many other events and gestures to honor survivors and those who have lost their battles with breast cancer. Here at Acceptance, we sponsor Sista Strut, which are walks that happens through out the year to raise money and awareness for breast cancer.

Breast cancer effects both men and women but is more prominent in women. Did you know that 1 in 8 women will be diagnosed with breast cancer in their lifetimes?

National Breast Cancer Awareness Month is a chance to remind people of the importance of finding breast cancer in its early stages. You can make a difference by spreading the word about mammograms and encouraging others to be involved in awareness activities.

Fast facts about breast cancer:

  • This year, an estimated 330,930 women in the United States will be diagnosed with breast cancer. 
  • An estimated 2,670 men in the United States will be diagnosed with breast cancer.
  • Breast cancer is the second most common cause of death from cancer in women in the United States after lung cancer.
  • As of January 2019, there are more than 3.1 million women with a history of breast cancer in the U.S. This includes women currently being treated and women who have finished treatment.
  • The most significant risk factors for breast cancer are gender (being a woman) and age (growing older).

Although breast cancer can’t be prevented, there are three steps to help detect it earlier - which is vital when it comes to treating the disease.
